What does needing to stim feel like?
Understanding Stimming
Biting your nails when you feel anxious. Twirling your hair when you feel bored. Flapping your hands when something excites you Jiggling your foot when you are concentrating.
Stimming might include: hand and finger mannerisms – for example, finger-flicking and hand-flapping. unusual body movements – for example, rocking back and forth while sitting or standing. posturing – for example, holding hands or fingers out at an angle or arching the back while sitting.
Stimming might be rocking, head banging, repeatedly feeling textures or squealing. You'll probably have seen this in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but not really wanted to ask about it. It is a term used widely in the ASD community.
Autistic people have very less or no control over stimming. They are not aware of their own stimming behaviour and neither are they aware of others reactions to their stimming behaviour.
Some people find stimming pleasurable and fun. Although stimming is commonly associated with autism, almost everyone stims from time to time. Stimming is especially prevalent among children.
While stimming is most associated with autistic folks, not all autistic people stim. This self-soothing behavior may also occur in anyone — whether they're neurodivergent or neurotypical.
Stimming differs from fidgeting and often includes unusual behaviors, like hand-flapping or repeating meaningless words and phrases. Stimming can help people with ASD with difficulty communicating, learning, and behaving.
Stimming can become such a habit that you're not even aware you're doing it. For most people, it's a harmless behavior. You recognize when and where it's inappropriate. For example, if you've been drumming your fingers on your desk for 20 minutes, you take social cues that you're irritating others and choose to stop.
Tic– a sudden, repetitive, non-rhythmic motor movement or vocalization. Countered to the 'itch feeling' of stimming, a tic is more like a 'sneeze' that just happens. Tics occur on a spectrum, the more severe being called Tourette syndrome.
Understimulation: Stimming helps provide extra sensory input when needed. Pain reduction: Repeated banging of the head or body actually reduces the overall sensation of pain. One hypothesis is that stimming causes the release of beta-endorphins in the body, which then causes a feeling of anesthesia or pleasure.
Can you stim and not have ADHD?
Stimming is a universal behavior that can occur in anyone. It is not exclusive to ADHD or any other medical condition. Stimming exists on a continuum. Some people may stim, while others may not.
Stimming is a normal behavior for people with ADHD. It helps them focus and calm down. There are ways to manage stimming behaviors, and loved ones can provide support. If you see someone stimming stay, try to stay calm and be positive.
